Industrial scales are generally classed as larger types of floor scale used in the supply chain fulfilment, retail, food, warehouse, and laboratory sectors. Most industrial scales are not portable and require a fixed position within the weighing area where testing takes place. These instruments are designed to be robust so they can operate accurately in the broad range of harsh environments in which they are used.

There are many different types and sizes of industrial scale with different features and benefits. More modern industrial scales have lcd digital readout with the connectivity benefits of USB ports, RS-232 interfaces or Bluetooth adapter modules which allows weighing data to be transferred to a computer for storage and analysis. Older devices still in use involve a basic platform and analogue scale, which requires users to read and record the data manually.

Despite the robust nature of these instruments, measurement accuracy can still drift over time. Calibration of industrial scales is therefore crucial to companies providing the right number of parts or the correct amount of food ingredients to their customers. Industrial scale calibration is performed like any other weighing instrument calibration with the use of highly accurate test weight standards or a load cell.
