A HV (high voltage) resistance box is often more commonly referred to as a high voltage decade box and is a piece of test equipment that includes several different resistor values. The accuracy of resistance boxes is very high, making them an ideal choice as a calibration tool for electrical test laboratories. The main advantage of a resistance box is the availability of multiple resistance values in one setting therefore negating the need for multiple pieces of test equipment.
High voltage resistance decade boxes are different from standard decade boxes in that they designed for the checking and calibration of insulation testers at voltages of up to 5kV (5000v), with a limited number of devices now capable of measuring up to 10kV (10,000v). These high resistance decade boxes use precision resistors of different construction materials, they are chosen and designed specifically for operation at high voltage, with very low leakage to minimise measurement error.
Due to the high accuracy of high resistance decade boxes and their use in calibrating less accurate instrumentation it is very important that these devices themselves are checked regularly.
