Current clamps, also known as clamp meters, are workhorse instruments used regularly to take current readings from a conductor (wire or cable) within an electrical system without the need to shut down or disconnect the system to take the measurement. The reading is taken due to the unique design, that allows the instrument to clamp around the conductor without the need for direct contact. These devices were originally designed to measure only current but have developed over the years to include more measurement functions like voltage and resistance, making them a more versatile type of multimeter instrument.
Clamp meters are often preferred when technicians need to measure high levels of current with many standard models capable of up to 600 Amperes, with specialist advanced options going as high as 2000 Amperes. Most multi-function testers and multimeters using probes to measure current can only handle low currents for short periods of time as over exposure can cause damage to these instruments. Actual contact with current carrying conductors can also increase the risk of electrical shock or damage, current clamps allow safe operation and testing along with the added convenience.
Most clamp meter manufacturers recommend annual calibration to ensure these tools continue to make measurements within the manufacturer’s specifications. Calibrationhouse specialises in calibration of electrical test equipment so can offer a UKAS accredited clamp meter calibration service both at our laboratory and onsite at customers premises. We calibrate many different makes and models including our partner brand Seaward AC/DC Current Clamp used to test solar installations.
Our team of expert technicians are on hand to help you with any queries you have about calibration, servicing or repair.
